The Epistemic Functions of Biological Agency in Evolutionary Biology

Abstract

Explanations for adaptive change tend to emphasize what happens to organisms rather than what organisms do, or how they do it. The surging interest in the relationship between developmental plasticity and evolution demonstrates that biological agency can structure research agendas, and raises a number of general issues concerning explanatory power and the nature of explanation in evolutionary biology.
